On Thursday, House Chaplain Father Conroy rescinded the  resignation he had tendered at House Speaker Paul Ryan's request last month.  In a letter sent  Thursday to Speaker Paul Ryan,  Conroy wrote, "While you never spoke with me in person, nor did you send me any correspondence, on Friday, April 13, 2018  your Chief of Staff, Jonathon Burks, came to me and informed me that you were asking for my letter of resignation ...I inquired as to whether or not it  was 'for cause,' and Mr. Burks mentioned dismissively something like, 'maybe it's time that we had a Chaplain that wasn't a Catholic.'"  Late Thursday,  Speaker Ryan did an about face and told Father Conroy that he could keep his job after all.  Ryan had faced growing criticism from some members of both  parties for ousting the Catholic chaplain. In a statement, Ryan said he accepted Conroy's letter and decided Conroy will remain in his position as  House Chaplain.
