Gov. Bevin Pardons Man Serving Life For Sex Abuse Of Stepdaughter

(Frankfort, KY) - A man serving a life sentence for sexually abusing his six-year-old stepdaughter 20 years ago is free after being pardoned by Governor Matt Bevin.

Bevin says Paul Hurt was wrongly convicted in Jefferson County in 2001, noting that the judge in the original case, Stephen Mershon, has advocated for Hurt's release.

Hurt's accuser recanted her testimony in 2015, but the conviction wasn't set aside, partially because Mershon had directly and privately confronted her.
