Cold Temperatures Lead to Water Main Breaks

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Reports of frozen pipes and water main breaks are on the rise as bitter cold temperatures grip the area.

Louisville Water Company crews have repaired more than 30 main breaks since Monday.    They typically average 2-to-3 breaks per day.

The utility has also received hundreds of calls from customers reporting frozen or burst water pipes in their homes and businesses.    Unfortunately, Louisville Water doesn't maintain those pipes.

Some tips to minimize the risk and damage from frozen pipes include:  locating the water shut-off valve, open cabinets under sinks and keep a small stream of water running from the cold water faucet.
