GEORGETOWN, Ky. -- We know what caused the death of 1999 Kentucky Derby winner Charismatic.
A necropsy performed at the University of Kentucky reveals the horse suffered a severe catastrophic fracture of his pelvis that resulted in fatal bleeding.
Charismatic was found dead Sunday at Old Friends Thoroughbred Retirement Center in Georgetown.
Veterinarian Bryan Waldridge says fatal pelvis fractures are uncommon and usually unforeseeable. He says it's not possible to know exactly how the injury happened to Charismatic.
