WWII vet Ernie Micka called so we could wish him a happy 102nd birthday, and we also got him to tell some war stories…
Ernie was 1st Sergeant of Company ‘B’, 15th Engineer Combat Battalion of the 9th Infantry Division of the U.S. Army. He was already in the Army when Pearl Harbor happened.......he was supposed to get out in a couple months after Pearl Harbor but ended up staying in the service almost 4 more years.
His first overseas stint began in North Africa under General Patton against General Rommel helping to capture over 200,000 prisoners. His next mission was to help drive the Germans out of Sicily. He was then sent to England to re-outfit for the landing of the 9th Division on Utah Beach on DDay plus 2. Went across Europe. Ernie is proud to say he served from the first day of WWII to the last, being gone from home almost 5 years serving his country. Ernie turned 102 years old on April 5th.
