Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar announced on Thursday that DNA testing is being used on every detained migrant child currently in the department’s care to confirm parentage as quickly and accurately as possible. Azar said that the normal procedure of using documentation won’t move quickly enough to comply with a federal judge’s order that children from birth to age 4 be reunited by Tuesday, and for those aged 5 to 17 be reunited with a parent, relative or guardian by July 26. But immigration advocates sounded the alarm saying that it sets up these children and their families for government surveillance “for the rest of their lives.”
