Do you remember your first summer job?  Saving money for school -- or better yet -- spending-money while hanging out with your friends was a rite of passage for most kids.   But according to the Pew Research Center, the number of teens working in summer jobs has dropped significantly in recent summers. Looking at the average employment rate over the years (beginning in the 1940's) for 16-19 year olds in June, July & August,  teen employment reflected what was going on in the rest of the country:  rising during economic good times and falling during and after recessions, but generally fluctuating between 46% (the low, in 1963) and 58% (the peak, in 1978).  But last summer only about 35% reported having any kind of gainful employment.  What's behind the drop?  And what kinds of jobs are kids taking these days?  Chances are, it's not at the counter of the "Home of the Loose Meat Sandwich."
