Less than two weeks after a mass shooting at a high school southeast of Houston, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has laid out a package of measures intended to prevent a future attack, or at least to respond to it more quickly. At the heart of Abbott’s proposal is the concept of ‘hardening’ schools as a target -- with stronger doors, fewer entrances and an increase the number of “school marshals,” campus personnel trained and licensed to carry concealed handguns on the job.
