Jefferson County Board of Education Approves School Choice Proposal

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The Jefferson County Public Schools district has voted to overhaul its student assignment plan, in what leaders call the most significant change in decades.

The school board unanimously approved the plan, which includes establishing "choice zones" in the city's west end to give families options to send their children to middle and high schools closer to their homes.

The new assignment plan effectively ends decades of "busing" to keep schools more integrated.

It provides additional funding for "choice-zone" schools. It also sets diversity goals for the district's magnet programs.

The plan is set to go into effect for kindergarten, sixth and ninth-grade students beginning in the fall of 2023.
