The Jockey Club is out with a sobering report ahead of the Kentucky Derby.
The Jockey Club's Equine Injury Database shows nearly 400 thoroughbreds suffered deadly injuries while racing last year. In 2021 thoroughbreds suffered 366 deadly injuries while racing, 33 more than in 2020.
Experts say the number of thoroughbreds that die due to racing injuries will improve as more people are hired to provide medical oversight of the horses.
