Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao Resigns

Swearing In Held For U.S. Senators To Start The 117th Congress

(Washington, DC) - Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, who is the wife of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, is resigning because of Wednesday's riot at the U.S. Capitol.

Chao says in a statement the violence in the halls of Congress was entirely avoidable. She said she was deeply troubled in a way she can't set aside.

Chao says her department will help the incoming administration prepare to take charge after Joe Biden becomes President on January 20th.
