Miners Continue Protest Following Company's Shuttering, Bounced Paychecks

(Cumberland, KY) - Laid off coal miners held protests for a fourth-straight day on top of a railroad track as they continued blocking a train from leaving a Harlan County mine.

The miners are demanding weeks of back pay from their bankrupt employer.

Blackjewel filed a motion on July 1, which came without warning and sparked turmoil when paychecks were bounced.

The company has operations in West Virginia, Virginia, and Wyoming, in addition to Kentucky.

The bankruptcy of the country's sixth-largest coal producer came after a string of other major coal bankruptcies in recent years, including Blackhawk and Wyoming-based Cloud Peak Energy in May.
