Mayor's Give A Day | Week of Service 2019

MAYOR’S GIVE A DAY / WEEK OF SERVICE 2019

LOUISVILLE IS A PLACE WHERE COMPASSION IS A WAY OF LIFE

A showcase and celebration of compassion and service in all areas of the Louisville community.

April 13 – 20, 2019

To spotlight nonprofit organizations and needs of the community and to encourage and inspire corporate and community partnerships so that everyone in our community can participate in this annual opportunity to help others.

When Mayor Fischer was elected in 2011, he decided to focus on compassion as one of our city’s core values. That year, he issued a “one day call to serve others.” Several of our largest companies and organizations committed to participate and the Kentucky Derby Festival board voted to make Give a Day an annual Kentucky Derby Festival event. Over 800 volunteers participated on that inaugural day. The event has grown and expanded to more than an entire week with participation in Give A Day 2018 exceeding 205,000 volunteers and acts of compassion

There are a myriad of ways that citizens can participate. They can:

* Create their own service project 2018 projects included:

o Building beds for children

o Doing chores for elderly neighbors

o Refurbishing and donating bicycles to refugees

o Removing litter and debris from neighborhoods, parks and schools

* Work with established organizations in a traditional volunteer role: schools, businesses, places of worship, or other nonprofit organizations * Go to www.mygiveaday.com (managed by Metro United Way) to choose and register from select service opportunities/projects
