FRANKFORT, Ky. -- Kentucky lawmakers have given initial approval to sports betting legislation.
The House Licensing Committee approved a bill that would allow wagering on professional and college sports events at Kentucky horse tracks and Kentucky Speedway. It would also legalize internet poker that would be regulated by the lottery.
The bill's sponsor, Republican Representative Adam Koenig, says sports wagering would generate at least $20 million a year in tax revenue.
The conservative Family Foundation opposes the bill, claiming it will hurt Kentucky families and have a corrupting influence on government.
Kentucky is one of several states to consider legalizing sports betting aft ther U.S. Supreme Court overturned a federal law that prevents states from allowing the wagering. Indiana and Tennessee are considering similar legislation.
The measure now goes to the full House for its consideration.
