Legislation Reducing The Role Of The Kentucky Secretary Of State Advances

FRANKFORT, Ky. -- A bill that would change the role of the Kentucky Secretary of State is moving to the full Senate.

The bill sponsored by Senate Majority Floor Leader Damon Thayer would make the Secretary of State a non-voting member of the State Board of Elections and eliminate that office's access to the voter registration database.

Thayer says the bill addresses recent reports that Alison Lundergan-Grimes and her staff accessed the database for political purposes.

He says the move is non-partisan and is meant to give Kentucky voters confidence in the system.

The Secretary of State's office had no comment on the bill.
