Charlestown Cop Dead After Two County Chase

SCOTT COUNTY, Ind. -- A southern Indiana police officer is dead after a two county chase Wednesday night.

Indiana State Police say Charlestown officer Benton Bertram was trying to stop 35 year old Benjamin Eads of Freedom, Indiana for a traffic violation when he ran, leading officers through Charlestown and into Scott County.

Indiana State Police say Bertram lost control of his car at the intersection of State Roads 56 and 3 near Scottsburg, hitting a tree. The 33 year old Bertram, a nine year veteran of the Charlestown Police Department, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Eads fled the scene of the crash and was later arrested back in Clark County and is facing a charge of Resisting Law Enforcement Causing Death in Scott County along with two other felony charges out of Clark County. Eads is being held in the Scott County Jail.
