Feds Say Gun Prosecution Cases Increase

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- A local-federal partnership is seeing success in getting guns off the streets of Louisville.

Project Safe Neighborhoods is a partnership between federal prosecutors, LMPD, ATF and DEA along with the Jefferson County Commonwealth's Attorney.

Prosecutors say they've charged 105 defendants with federal gun charges in 2018 and have filed 152 federal gun cases this year, a 60 percent increase over 2017.

U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Kentucky Russell Coleman says while the numbers show Project Safe Neighborhoods is working there is still work to be done, citing the more than 250 shootings and 73 homicides in Louisville this year.

Defendants face up to ten years in federal prison for unlawfully possessing a gun with some looking at mandatory life sentences if they are repeat drug offenders with a gun.
