Louisville, KY -- Papa John's Pizza is blaming founder John Schnatter for defying the board of directors.
A special committee arranged by the board said Schnatter disobeyed the board by going off-message during a 2017 earnings call. In the call, the then-CEO blamed the NFL anthem protests for a dip in sales even though the board told him not to bring up the issue. The board said Schnatter had a pattern of ignoring the board's decisions. A couple months after the call, Schnatter stepped down as CEO and in July he left his chairman post after saying a racial slur during a conference call.
