LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- LMPD says crime is down but homicides are up.
LMPD says overall crime in the city is down four percent in the first half of 2017 compared to the same period in 2016.
Violent crimes such as rape and robbery were down around 15 percent while homicides are up 20 percent, outpacing 2016's record homicide count.
Mayor Fischer says the root cause of most crime in the city can be traced back to the opioid epidemic.
LMPD Chief Steve Conrad calls the numbers encouraging but says there is still work to be done.
