KSP Launches New Investigative Unit

FRANKFORT, Ky. - Kentucky State Police launch a new team focusing on officer-involved shootings.

Since January, when it was formed, the  CIRT, or  Critical Incident Response Team, has been called out five times.

The team is part of an effort to standardize procedures and focus resources on quality and transparent officer-involved shooting investigations throughout the state.

Since 2015, KSP has investigated 29 of its own officers who were involved in shooting incidents.

The team of six, based in Frankfort, consists of three lieutenants, two sargeants and a trooper.

They are ready at a moment's notice to mobilize an investigation.
