Kentucky Records First Mine Death Of 2017

FRANKFORT, Ky. -- Kentucky records its first mining death of the year.

The Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet says Ray Hatfield of Hi Hat suffered fatal injuries inside the R&C Coal LLC Mine Number 2 in Pikeville on Thursday. The cabinet doesn't say what the incident was that caused Hatfield's death, who is a 23 year mine veteran. Governor Bevin tweeted about the incident, asking for prayers for Hatfield's friends, family and co-workers. The mine remains closed as investigators look into the incident.
