LOUISVILLE, Ky. - A Louisville radio legend has died.
Wayne Perkey, who hosted the morning show on 840WHAS for three decades, died Sunday morning. The 84-year-old Perkey had been hospitalized with COVID.
A native of Tennessee, Perkey worked in radio in several cities before landing in Louisville in 1969.
On WHAS, Perkey hosted a top-rated morning show that included a mix of news, talk, music, weather and sports. He interviewed the top news makers of the day, from mayors to governors and celebries. Children would anxiously await Perkey's school closing announcements on snowy days.
Perkey was also the long-time host of the WHAS Crusade for Children. He retired from WHAS in 1999. Recently, he had been helping care for his ex-wife, Jane Anne. They have five children.
Funeral arrangement are pending. Perkey's family would like donations in his memory to go to the Crusade for Children.
