(Washington, DC) - Senator Rand Paul revealed Wednesday that his wife bought thousands of dollars worth of stock in a drug used to treat COVID-19 in early 2020.
In February last year, Kelley Paul bought up to $15,000 of stock in Gilead Services, which makes the antiviral drug remdesivir. Remdesivir later became the first drug approved to treat coronavirus infections.
A 2012 law enacted to block congressional insider trading requires trade disclosures within 45 days.
Paul's reporting was 16 months late but the Kentucky Republican's spokesperson said that's because the original filing wasn't properly transmitted. The aide also noted the senator's wife lost money on the investment.
