LOUISVILLE, Ky.-- The Atlanta police chief who resigned last year after a controversial shooting has been hired to run Louisville's police department.
Mayor Greg Fischer named Erika Shields as the new LMPD chief. She replaces Steve Conrad, who was fired as chief during the Breonna Taylor protests.
Shields stepped down from the Atlanta post following the death of Rayshard Brooks, a black man who was shot by officers outside a Wendy's restaurant. One officer was charged with murder.
Shields called Brooks' killing "a tragedy," and she resigned because she didn't want to be a distraction.
Louisville Public Safety Chief Amy Hess says Shields was a unanimous decision of the police chief selection committee. A committee member, Metro Council President David James, says he's very confident Shields "is going to do an outstanding job" leading the department.
