LOUISVILLE, Ky.- Rona is a mom! The Louisville Zoo's 6-year-old gray seal gave birth to her first pup Monday morning.
Associate Veterinarian Dr. Julie Ter Beest says the birth went well. Rona's maternal instincts are strong and she's nursing her pup.
The pup's gender is not yet known. The veterinarians are giving the mother and pup time to bond before they conduct a neonatal exam.
Gray seals weigh about 35 pounds at birth. They'll grow to about 120 pounds in the first month.
The zoo will be announcing details of a naming contest at a later date.
