Breeders Cup' Will Be Held At Santa Anita As Planned

UPDATED STORY: (Los Angeles, CA) - The owners of Santa Anita Park say the 2019 Breeders' Cup will go ahead despite 30 horse deaths and new state regulations.

The signature horse racing event is scheduled to be held at the Arcadia race track. Organizers say it will go ahead in November.

California Governor Gavin Newsom signed a bill this week that gives state regulators more power to shut down tracks with safety issues.

It's not clear if they'll target Santa Anita. Critics are calling for an end to horse racing.

ORIGINAL STORY: (Lexington, KY) - Horse racing fans are keeping a close eye on Thursday's meeting of the Breeders' Cup board of directors in Lexington.

The deaths of dozens of horses at Santa Anita Park in California have horse racing officials worried about holding the event there this year.

If the Breeders' Cup is moved from Santa Anita, Churchill Downs may be considered to host the championships in the fall.

The two-day event was held in Louisville in 2018.
