Massive Sinkhole Closes Zoo

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- A large sinkhole forced the closure of the Louisville Zoo and the nearby Mega Cavern underground storage facility.

City officials estimate the sinkhole is at least 50 yards wide by 85 yards long. It's in an unoccupied area of the zoo and did not affect any animals.

The operators of the Mega Cavern had initially closed the facility for inspection after a report of a small earthquake in Tennessee that was felt in Kentucky. It's not known if the quake is related to the sinkhole.

Zoo officials are awaiting engineering inspections of the sinkhole before deciding when to reopen the zoo.
