(Washington, DC) - A sweeping farm bill is headed to the House after passage by the Senate yesterday. The more than $800 billion bill easily passed on a vote of 87-13.
The bipartisan measure provides billions in subsidies to U.S. farmers.
Farmers and ranchers have struggled with declines in commodities prices due to the U.S. trade war with China.
The final bill does not include tougher work requirements for people getting food stamps that was favored by House Republicans.
The farm bill also legalizes production of hemp. Hemp is a form of cannabis with lower THC levels than marijuana. THC is described as the chemical responsible for most of marijuana's psychological effects.
