Audit Says KentuckyWired Sticks Kentucky Taxpayers With $1.5 Billion Tab

FRANKFORT, Ky. -- A project aimed at delivering high-speed internet service to all of Kentucky is plagued by delays and cost overruns. 

That's according to a special audit of KentuckyWired, a project to install fiber optic cables in all 120 counties.Auditor Mike Harmon says the audit revealed KentuckyWired is almost $100 million over budget for construction costs.  And Harmon says a botched procurement process will lead to taxpayers getting stuck with $1.5 billion tab over 30 years.    

KentuckyWired was announced five years ago by former Governor Steve Beshear and Congressman Hal Rogers as a public-private partnership.
