LEXINGTON, Ky. -- A University of Kentucky student accused of driving drunk and killing a 4-year-old boy has entered a not guilty plea to the charges.
18-year-old Jacob Heil was not required to be at his arraignment because the DUI charge is a misdemeanor. His attorney entered the plea for Heil.
Police say the UK freshman was behind the wheel of a car that hit Marco Shemwell as he was waiting with his family to cross a street near Kroger Field. The boy died two days later.
A police report says Heil admitted drinking two beers at a tailgating party.
The university has suspended Heil and the fraternity he was pledging, Alpha Tau Omega.
Heil is due back in court next week.
