(Louisville, KY) - A COVID-19 patient at Norton Healthcare is the first in the world to take part in a clinical study of the drug Selinexor as a potential treatment for the virus. 

In higher doses, Selinexor is approved by the Food and Drug Administration to treat cancer.

Norton officials say the trial is studying the drug's antiviral and anti-inflammatory impact on patients with severe cases of COVID-19. 

Just 40 hospitals worldwide will participate in the trial.
